An imaginary purchase of sunglasses is the opportunity to reflect on how technology is rapidly changing the experience of consumers
It's 2030 and Becky wants to buy new sunglasses. "Hi Alexa, I'd like new sunglasses. Which ones do you recommend?". Today in Italy, 30.6% of internet users already use a virtual assistant like Alexa or Google Assistant every week (meltwater2024). Alexa, analyzing her owner's preferences, style and budget, suggests different options worn by top influencers and shows them to her on her smart TV. Becky puts on her smart glasses (the growth of these devices is expected to go from $5.66 million in 2022 to $12.40 million by 2030) and navigates through virtual showcases projected on the walls in her room. An AI-based chatbot provides her with information on various models' features, prices and customer reviews. Juniper Research points to an increase in the global spending for chatbots, from $12 million (2023) to $72 million (2028), so that by 2026, it's estimated that more than 150 million voice assistants will be in use the US. Choosing is difficult, because Becky is unsure about the comfort of the models proposed and goes to a physical store to try on some of the sunglasses.
Artificial intelligence (AI) has become so sea
mlessly integrated into our day to day lives, you may not even notice when you’re using it. From asking Siri for a song to following Waze on your way to work, AI is redefining the way we communicate, work and play.
The retail sector is one industry that has been transformed by the rise in AI technology. The e-commerce industry achieved a record $5.7tn in sales in 2022, accounting for 20 per cent of all retail sales around the world.
And while some of the AI functionality has become ingrained in the way we shop, such as online chatbots offering purchasing support, or the behind-the-scenes roles of inventory management and supply chain networks, the really thrilling transformations are taking place in the form of experiential retail.

AI Overviews will have ads above, below, and within AI-generated search results.
Advertisers will get a front-row seat to Google’s generative AI search features.
AI Overviews will have ads above, below, and within AI-generated search results, Rachel Melgaard, Google’s director of global search, said on Tuesday at a press roundtable ahead of the company’s Marketing Live event.
The additional updates to generative-AI powered search results stand to bolster Google’s already massive search advertisement business, which is under pressure from AI-powered competitors and a major antitrust case. Last quarter, Google’s search business brought in more than $46 billion in revenue last quarter, beating expectations.
Meta dismissed thousands of employees in 2023, which Mark Zuckerberg dubbed the “year of efficiencies.”
But when a machine-learning glitch misappropriated hundreds of millions of dollars from Meta advertisers, even those who spent millions or tens of millions of dollars on the platform per year had little recourse aside from contacting a chatbot AI (which fixed a grand total of zero problems across tens of thousands of accounts).
Meta has lost the pulse of its customer base, and it doesn’t care much. (The people they’d complain to were fired.)
Google advertisers, meanwhile, have fretted since the company launched a paid account service tier in August, shunting more default free services to AI. The feedback is dismal, but the AI train doesn’t stop for that. Search Engine Land reports Google has big plans to expand AI’s role in customer service in 2024.
